Course Description: Developing elementary level skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese in everyday communication settings. Fundamentals of pronunciation, grammar, and Chinese characters will be introduced. The course is for students who have had no or very limited prior exposure to the Chinese language.

Prerequisite: No background in Chinese or Language Placement Exam (see placement exam details) or consent of instructor.

Course Description: CHN 010 is an introduction to modern Chinese literature as well as the exciting Chinese major at UC Davis. Reading assignments include short stories, movies, plays, and personal narratives. Absolutely no previous knowledge of Chinese language, history, or culture is required, but students will be expected to have good English language skills and be able to tackle a large number of artistic works and background texts in English only. This class has a discussion-driven format, active participation in the English language and being able to take notes, write exams and a term paper in English are expected.  By the end of the class, students will have enough experience with critical skills, written composition, and modern Chinese history in the English language to attend upper division classes in the East Asian studies department.

Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in Honors Program.

Course Description: English language survey of Chinese fiction as it evolved amidst the great historical, social and cultural changes of the twentieth century.  Thorough study of the most influential writers and genres. English language skills are essential. This class has a discussion-driven format, active participation in the English language and being able to take notes, write exams and a term paper in English are expected. Students with NO background in Chinese language, history and culture are welcome to join this intellectual journey to gain essential knowledge of modern China!

Course Description: Building on Chinese 006/003BL, further developing the four communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and preparing students to function more effectively and communicate more accurately in Modern Standard Mandarin-speaking environments. Students read both dialogues and articles pertaining to a variety of issues in contemporary China and discuss the ethical, moral, aesthetic, social, and cultural concerns of the Chinese that relate to these issues.

Course Description: This fifth-year Chinese course is designed to prepare students with advanced-high level competence for future professional engagement in Chinese. It focuses on developing sophisticated Chinese speaking and writing skills for formal settings of communication as well as deep understandings of Chinese culture and society. Students study authentic Chinese texts, mainly literary works and scholarly essays on selected topics of Chinese language, literature, culture, and society. Multimedia materials may also be adopted. Students gain familiarity with and better command of the expressive system of written Chinese, including its rhetorical strategies, discourse devices, sentence patterns, formulaic expressions, prosodic characteristics, and vocabularies featuring different types of written Chinese. They also develop critical thinking and scholarly understanding of social and cultural issues of modern China as related to the course materials. Major class activities include intensive reading, discussion, composition and paper writing, and formal presentations. All classes are conducted in Chinese.

Course Description: This is an introductory course of Chinese "Linguistics", i.e., theoretical studies of the structure of the Chinese language, including its sound structure (phonetics & phonology), lexical system, sentence structure (syntax), and semantic system. It also discusses the structure of Chinese scripts (characters). It is NOT a Chinese language training class and does NOT teach "advanced Chinese."

Prerequisite: Chinese 006 (may be taken concurrently) or Language Placement Exam (see placement exam details) or consent of instructor (czchu@ucdavis.edu); Linguistics 001 recommended.
